Suspect wanted in armed robbery near University of Tennessee campus

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Law enforcement is searching for a suspect after an armed robbery was reported near the University of Tennessee campus in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Knoxville Police Department officers responded to the 1100 block of Cumberland Avenue around 1:45 a.m. The victim, a 22-year-old female, reported being approached by the occupant of a white sedan while walking along 11th Street.

The suspect, described as a white or Hispanic male wearing all black, allegedly demanded money from the victim before fleeing the scene on a nearby greenway with the victim’s purse. An alert from the University of Tennessee Police Department said the suspect was armed with a handgun.

Officers canvassed the area but were unable to locate the suspect or the white sedan. An investigation remains ongoing.
