Two charged after Skowhegan burglary prompts police chase

SKOWHEGAN — An Augusta woman A 16-year-old New York boy was arrested and charged after leading police on a high-speed chase Tuesday that began with a burglary report, police said.

Matisse Fry, 42, who fled from police in her vehicle, was arrested on charges of burglary, criminal speed, eluding an officer, failure to arrest or detain and violation of condition of release, the chief said David Bucknam of the Skowhegan Police Department. a statement issued Tuesday evening.

The teenager, who was in the car with Fry, was charged with robbery, resisting arrest or detention, criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon and terrorizing, Bucknam said.

The incident began around 1:45 p.m., when Officer Richard Pierce and Cpl. Joshua York responded to a burglary in progress at 26 Pineview Avenue in Skowhegan, Bucknam said.

When the two officers responded to the home, they saw someone wearing a hooded sweatshirt climb into the passenger seat of a 2022 Nissan Rogue SUV, Bucknam said.

The vehicle then sped off, traveling onto Canaan Road, also known as US Route 2, via Philbrick Drive. At the intersection with Canaan Road, Bucknam said the passenger jumped out of the vehicle and ran into a wooded area. The driver of the vehicle — later identified as Fry — made a left turn and “accelerated at a high rate of speed” east toward Canaan.

Police eventually stopped the vehicle near Lake George Regional Park, which is on the town line between Skowhegan and Canaan.

Fry refused to get out of the vehicle but said there was a firearm in the passenger seat, Bucknam said.

“After several attempts to get her out, the officers moved to the driver’s door and assisted her out of the vehicle,” his statement said.

In the passenger seat, police found a .357 caliber Smith & Wesson revolver with six rounds in the cylinder and a ski mask, according to Bucknam.

Meanwhile, a Somerset County sheriff’s deputy driving on U.S. Route 2 saw the 16-year-old jump out of the vehicle and detained him until Skowhegan police officers arrived, Bucknam said. The teenager’s identity has not been released due to his age.

The police investigation into the incident involving the two “dangerous individuals” remained ongoing Tuesday night, Bucknam said.

“It was a team effort that ended this situation without injury,” Bucknam said in the statement and thanked the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office for its assistance.
