IRS tax scams are on the rise; here’s how to report fraud

STATEN ISLAND, NY — The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) recently reminded Americans to be wary of scammers and shared information on how to report fraud.

The agency released the information as part of its efforts for International Fraud Awareness Week, which runs from November 17-23.

Tax fraud comes in many forms, according to the IRS, including scams targeting individuals, tax-related schemes by nefarious groups and fraud committed when taxpayers knowingly submit incomplete or inaccurate information.

Members of the public can assist the IRS in identifying and investigating these types of fraud by filing Form 3949-A, Recommendations for Information Reportsan anonymous form that can be submitted voluntarily by individuals to report alleged violations of tax law.

The IRS reviews these submissions and determines the appropriate action to take based on the information provided, according to the agency, which may recommend for audit or prosecution.

Separate Form 13909, Tax-Exempt Organizations Claim and Form 14242, Report Suspected Abusive Tax Promotions or Preparers it also exists for members of the public suspicious of other possible types of fraud.

If the information leads to a successful collection, persons submitting such forms may also be eligible for a cash reward by completing a Form 211, Request for Assignment of Original Information.

The IRS also prepares an annual Dirty Dozen List which brings public awareness to a variety of common scams that taxpayers may face. This year’s list included phishing and smishing scams, questionable employee retention credits, fuel tax credit claims, bid-in-compromise factories and bogus charities that exploit taxpayer generosity.
