Why digital identity is the ultimate battleground in cybersecurity

We live with widely available generatives AI tools for nearly two years now, so it’s a good time to ask the question – what effect is it having on the public’s understanding of their digital identities and how secure their identities are online? The answer, unfortunately, shows that there is much more to do to improve security online in the age of you. In a recent study commissioned by Okta, 93% of consumers in Europe are concerned about digital identity theft, and over half (54%) of consumers have increased their awareness of their digital footprint in the past year. This increased vigilance is driven by the rise of cyber attacks and the rise of artificial intelligence, both of which present new challenges and amplify existing vulnerabilities in the online environment.

As it is the entry point to any experience in a digital world, focusing on digital identity must be a priority. It serves as the base layer of security and access control. With 80% of cybersecurity attacks stemming from misuse of credentials, identity-based attacks have become a top method for bad actors to exploit weaknesses in authentication processes. In response, business leaders must quickly adopt rigorous security strategies and foster a security-conscious work culture, especially in the age of AI.
