Masked thieves break into Windsor Castle property, fueling concerns about royal security

LONDON (AP) — British police are investigating a break-in on the grounds of Windsor Castle, fueling concerns about the security of the royal residence in west London.

The suspects stole a van and a quad from a farm building on the estate just before midnight on October 13, Thames Valley Police said in a statement. Police provided a general location for the property, suggesting the break-in occurred more than a mile away Windsor Castle.

The Sun newspaper, which first reported the break-in, said two masked men scaled a 6ft (1.8m) fence before taking the vehicles and climbing through a security barrier to escape.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla were not at Windsor Castle at the time of the raid. The paper suggested that Prince William and his family were at Adelaide Cottage, their home on the property, which is about a five-minute drive from the scene of the burglary.

Police said they are still investigating the incident. No arrests have been made.

Last month, The Sun reported that London’s Metropolitan Police Service, which provides armed protection for Britain’s royals, had removed armed officers from public entrances to Windsor Castle. The change was made due to a lack of officers authorized to carry firearms and in an effort to ease concerns among tourists who were nervous about the presence of armed officers, the newspaper said, citing unidentified police sources.

Armed officers are still stationed on the perimeter of the castle.

Security arrangements are being kept under “constant review”, taking into account the latest threat assessment, the Met told the newspaper.
