The Jennings Creek fire is now 90 percent contained after the fire reignited

GREENWOOD LAKE (WABC) — Friends and family are set to say goodbye to a state parks worker who was killed while trying to contain the Jennings Creek Fire in Greenwood Lake, NY.

Dariel Vasquez, 18, was a member of the State Parks Wildland fire crew who was killed while helping clear dry brush from the fire.

His wake took place on Sunday, and the funeral is scheduled for Monday, at 10 a.m., at St. Peter of Haverstraw.

Flags are also flown at half-staff in honor of Vasquez.

Over the weekend, Sterling State Forest re-ignited due to Saturday’s high winds.

It led to the voluntary evacuation of about 140 homes as the fire approached.

With residents out of the area, it also made it easier to tow fire equipment through the steep and narrow roads.

Efforts to contain the fire continued into Sunday as helicopters used thousands of gallons of water from nearby Lake Greenwood and battled the flames from the air.

Officials say they could use Mother Nature’s help more than ever.

“It’s kind of a waiting game because it’s safer to let it come to you than to go up in this field and try to put it out in the middle of things,” said Bob Rogers, state forester.

“This fire isn’t going out anytime soon, this is going to be Mother Nature putting the final cap on it.”

Orange County Executive Steve Newhouse extended the state of emergency on Sunday. Residents in need of shelter can head to their local middle school for help as the Greenwood Lake School District is closed for another day.
