Charges of assault, room search lifted, nursing student, death, foul play, ragging, assault, financial irregularities, suicide

Thiruvananthapuram: The family of a nursing student who died after falling from a hostel building in Pathanamthitta has alleged foul play. Ammu Sajeev (22), a fourth-year student of Chuttippara Government College of Nursing in Pathanamthitta, died on Friday evening after falling from the third floor of the hostel building. Ammu was originally from Ayiroopara here.

Her family alleged that Ammu was regularly subjected to ragging and character assassination. They also alleged that her classmates tried to break into her room while she was sleeping and that faculty members condoned such behavior.

According to the family, Ammu was under immense mental stress and her classmates had tried to physically assault her. They further accused the college and students of trying to justify her death, saying the problems started when Ammu was appointed as the tour coordinator.

“Ammu has been facing problems ever since she was appointed as the tour coordinator. She had decided not to go on the tour and was planning to move to Chennai to stay with her brother. She was called out of class, taken to the toilet and beaten. Although she reported this to a teacher, the matter was dropped,” said Ammu’s mother Radhamani.

The family had also lodged complaints about the problems at the college. Ammu had said that three students received marks as a result. She was blamed for the disappearance of a logbook, which added to her stress. Despite students entering her room without permission and conducting searches, nothing was found. “These actions caused him significant mental anguish and he could not take it anymore,” Radhamani said.

Radhamani added that she could not visit her daughter because of her husband’s recovery from angioplasty. “Ammu suffered from allergies and migraines and visited the hospital frequently. The tour was planned for December. The girls had been involved in financial irregularities during a medical camp organized by the college. Fearing exposure, I may have harmed Ammu,” she claimed.

Ammu’s brother Akhil Sajeev claimed that three students were responsible for her death. “My sister would not kill herself and foul play is involved. I will go to any extent to ensure justice,” he said.

Akhil also mentioned that Ammu had told him about a colleague who was preparing to attack her. “I work in Chennai and had already booked tickets to bring her here. Initially, we were told it just fell. She was taken to the hospital in an ambulance without proper facilities. The faculty and students colluded to harm him. Ammu knew about the financial irregularities of the students. She was terrified of even small heights; how could he have climbed to such a height? No first aid was given after the incident. He didn’t commit suicide or accidentally slip. The real cause of her death must be revealed,” he said.

Ammu, who was seriously injured in the fall, was first taken to the Pathanamthitta General Hospital by her teachers and classmates. After informing the family, she was shifted to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College in an intensive care ambulance. However, she succumbed to her injuries.
