Highway 126 crash victim named, parking lot fire causes concern

Here is a summary of recent incidents and announcements from Ventura County agencies:

126 accident victims named

Authorities have released the name of a driver killed on Highway 126 east of Piru last week.

Janely Martinez, 29, was from Fillmore, the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office reported.

Martinez had been driving west near Camino Del Rionear the Los Angeles County border around 2:30 a.m. Nov. 1, according to the California Highway Patrol. Her 2019 Jeep Wrangler veered onto the right shoulder and struck a drainage ditch. The impact flipped the vehicle onto its roof.

No one else was in the Jeep. Martinez’s smartphone sent a crash notification, CHP officials said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Moorpark CHP office is investigating the crash.

Parking lot fire during Santa Ana winds leads to arrest

A Moorpark man was arrested Thursday morning after he was seen setting a fire in the parking lot of a Ventura pet hospital during a dangerous fire.

The Ventura Police Department received a call shortly before 7 a.m. reporting a fire on the lot of Banfield Pet Hospital at 5380 Ralston St.

The situation was of “particular concern” due to Santa Ana winds and the nearby mountain fireofficials said in a press release.

A responding officer saw the 22-year-old man tending to a small fire about one square foot in size. The fuel consisted of trash and brush from the animal hospital, authorities said.

When the officer confronted the man, he tried to run. The suspect resisted and became physically combative with the officer, according to the police report. Eventually, the policeman took the man into custody and put out the small fire.

The officer suffered a minor injury during the fight when he pulled a muscle, said Cmdr. Ryan Weeks.

The man was arrested on suspicion of resisting and misdemeanor recklessly causing a fire, jail records show, as well as drug possession. He remained lodged at the main jail Friday with bail set at $40,000.
