Entering motor vehicle report leads to 7 arrests in Statesboro

STATESBORO, Ga. (WSAV) – Seven people were arrested in Statesboro Friday after an initial report of suspects breaking into a vehicle.

Around 4:30 a.m., officers with the Statesboro Police Department responded to a car call at an apartment complex in the 700 block of Georgia Avenue.

Along with officers from the Georgia Southern University Police Department, Statesboro police patrolled the area believing the suspects might still be nearby, officials said.

Officers attempted to stop and speak with two men — one with a firearm — who then entered an apartment in the 100 block of Lanier Drive, Statesboro PD said.

After police surrounded the building and attempted to remove the people from the home, detectives obtained a search warrant.

The Statesboro Police SWAT team cleared the home and seven people were taken into custody. In addition, investigators discovered approximately 5 lbs. of marijuana, three guns and other stolen property from a separate car entering.

One of the three guns seized was stolen Nov. 7 from a vehicle on Southern Court, Statesboro police said.

The following are facing charges in various cases:

  • Ja’shon Branch (17, Twin City, Ga): possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and tampering with evidence.

Officials said more arrests are expected as police investigate cars that recently entered the Lanier Drive area.
