SF. LUCIE COUNTY – A St. Louis County sheriff’s deputy. Lucie, who works at the jail, resigned during an internal affairs investigation into an incident that led to his arrest, according to newly released sheriff’s records.

Deputy Bryontrae Grant resigned after a misdemeanor arrest warrant was issued for his Aug. 14 arrest related to a June incident at the jail, records show. He has a court date in December.

An internal affairs investigation into Grant was completed, but he resigned before discipline could be administered. He would have been fired had he not quit, according to remarks attributed to Sheriff Keith Pearson, according to General Counsel JD Small.

Investigators reported on June 1 around 4:48 a.m., while breakfast trays were being served, Grant was involved in a use of force incident that was captured on video. An inmate took a tray of food and went into his cell. Not long after, a breakfast tray was thrown outside the cell.

Grant and another deputy went to the cell, and Grant entered.

Grant began to escort a handcuffed inmate out of the area, and the inmate turned his head toward Grant as if to say something.

After about six to eight steps, Grant took the prisoner to the floor.

Grant told investigators that the inmate began using racial slurs and that he thought the inmate was going to fight back. Other inmates also indicated that racial slurs were used.

Grant told investigators he wished he had done things differently, saying he “messed up” and shouldn’t have knocked the inmate down.

The internal affairs investigation found that in addition to committing a misdemeanor, Grant used excessive force resulting in injury.

In his resignation notice, Grant said he was leaving because of “better opportunities elsewhere”.
