State leaders seek funding for farmers during severe drought

GLASTONBURY, CT (WFSB) – State leaders want to protect farmers affected by severe drought conditions.

They said the way to do this is by providing more funding.

Relief could be on the way.

At noon Friday at the Killam & Bassette Farmstead in Glastonbury, state leaders said they will join forces to ask Congress for more funding for farmers.

Severe drought conditions have had a negative impact on farmland and farmers have said they have suffered.

Congressional funding would support and preserve farmland.

State leaders tried to push to provide emergency relief to farmers as soon as possible.

A drought can result in crop losses and reduced production.

Connecticut farmers have had their fair share of weather problems this year.

Severe flooding in August affected farmers in southwestern and western Connecticut.

They lost crops and livestock and were hit by high costs of property damage.

since friday the state was in a stage 2 drought advisory. Areas in northwestern Litchfield, Fairfield and Hartford counties were at Level 3.

Channel 3 forecasters said it was because of below-normal rainfall and fire danger.

The drought did not only affect farmers. Homeowners who rely on well water said they, too, have had problems.

A Wolcott woman told Channel 3 that she relies on a pool company to fill her properly. If not, she said she will have trouble doing daily tasks.

“We can’t shower at home,” said Karen Lokites of Wolcott. “We can’t wash at home. We use paper plates, plastic cups, plastic silverware because we can’t run our dishwasher.”

State leaders encouraged people to be careful about their water consumption.
