La Rondin pupils have raised hundreds of pounds for the children’s charity

Pupils at a special education school have completed a swimming challenge to raise money for children in need.

La Rondin School in Guernsey was inspired by The BBC’s Thousand Mile Challengewhere local radio stations across the country swam 1000 miles (1,609 km) for the charity.

Pupils completed their own version of the challenge, swimming over 800 lengths of the school pool, raising £771 in the process.

Assistant teacher Caitlin de Garis said she was proud of the children and described them as “amazing, incredible, resilient people” who “constantly surprise us every day”.

“The staff were absolutely amazed at how the children rose to the challenge,” said Mrs de Garis.

“We’ve had kids who weren’t that involved in swimming before who are now engaged, so it’s massive.”

“Truly special”

La Rondin pupil Leo said the challenge was “tough” but “amazing”.

“This was really special for me as I don’t think I’ve ever swam for Pudsey before,” he said.

Colleague Cody added: “It was quite interesting how much money we raised for Pudsey.”

Head of the School of Education, Cat Teasdale, said the challenge was all about participation.

“We have a range of skills and a range of swimming skills,” she said.

“What we wanted to do was make sure the kids were in the water and participating.
