The car fleeing the Newburgh Heights police almost hits the police chief

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – A police chase on Tuesday almost resulted in the Newburgh Heights Police Chief being hit by the suspect’s car when he held up Stop Sticks.

Police were initially called to the Shell gas station on Harvard Avenue after an argument in the parking lot. When officers arrived, a black Kia Soul took off from the parking lot, officers were advised that the party was highly intoxicated.

A police car driven by Chief John Majoy was a few blocks away and announced that the suspects were headed his way. In an attempt to get the car to stop, he parked his car and deployed the Stop Sticks. Kia tried to avoid the Stop Sticks by driving around and towards Chief Majoy. Majoy managed to jump out of the way before he was hit, suffering a minor shoulder injury.

The pursuit would continue for another 20 minutes or so before the car came to a stop on 271. Michael Harris, 45, of Woodmere, was uncooperative with police commands, even attempting to grab an officer’s taser.

Harris continued to refuse orders when officers brought him land. Harris then struggled with the officers, grabbing the deployed K-9’s face. The fight ended when a taser was used and Harris was placed in handcuffs.

Harris was charged with:

  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Reckless operation
  • Aggravated murder, intent to kill law enforcement
  • Resisting arrest
  • Felony assault
