Ralph’s shooting: 18-year-old arrested in deadly Sun Valley altercation, LAPD says

A homicide investigation is ongoing following an overnight shooting inside a Ralphs grocery store in Valley of the Sun that left a 19-year-old man dead and an 18-year-old man injured, officials said.

Patrol officers in the foothills area with Los Angeles Police Department responded to the grocery store in the Canyon Plaza Shopping Center, located at the intersection of Roscoe and Laurel Canyon avenues, around 11:40 p.m. Tuesday after receiving a radio call reporting a shooting.

Officers at the scene reviewed the store’s security footage and found that an argument had broken out between two groups of men, and at some point one of the men involved in the altercation pulled out a gun and started shooting. Two men were struck by gunfire, LAPD officials said.

A 19-year-old man was transported to the hospital by an unknown person, where he was pronounced dead by the hospital staff. His identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

The second person hit by gunfire, 18 years old, was taken to Pacifica Hospital in Vale in stable condition.

No injuries to patrons or employees were reported during the incident. LAPD investigators are reviewing surveillance footage from inside the grocery store.

LAPD officers located and later arrested the suspected gunman, identified as 18-year-old Jorge Armeta. He was booked into the Van Nuys Jail on a felony charge, with bail set at $2 million.

“We have most of the people responsible for the incident, but we are still looking for other people, including witnesses and those who were involved in the altercation,” said Lt. Guy Golan of the LAPD.

The motive for the shooting is unknown, but police do not believe it is gang-related.
