“I had to find my own feet”

Mick Schumacher says he had to “find his feet” on his journey to F1 after his father Michael’s accident in 2013.

Schumacher Snr., aged 55, suffered a serious head injury in a skiing accident in Meribel, France in December 2013.

The seventh time F1 the state of health of the world champion was shrouded in secret in the years since, with his wife Corinna insisting on protecting his privacy as he continues to recover.

Meanwhile, Mick made his F1 debut in 2021 and from 2023 is a reserve driver at Mercedes and in a new book – Inside Mercedes F1: Life in the fast lane – the 25-year-old spoke about his life before and after his father’s accident.

“I was a crazy kid — everything my dad did, I did,” Schumacher said.

“It was really supportive and a lot of fun, but it could also be challenging. Once, in a karting race, I braked very late in a corner and gained a lot of time. When I told him about it, he said, “Yeah, but you should have braked like that in every corner!”.

“I started racing in the Formula classes a year after (the accident) and from that moment I had to find my own feet.

“But I definitely learned a lot of technical points from him that I still use today, as well as from his coach. And I’ve always been very resilient.”

Jean Todt, who worked with Michael Schumacher during the historic five titles in a row at Ferrari from 2000-2004, he was the most frequent source of updates on the German, admitting in the past that he I watched the F1 races with Schumacher and, last year, the Frenchman spoke again about the Ferrari legend.

“Michael is here, so I don’t miss him,” Todt said L’Equipe in 2023.

“(But he’s) just not the Michael he was. He is different and is wonderfully guided by his protective wife and children.

“His life is different now and I have the privilege of sharing moments with him. That’s all there is to say.

“Unfortunately, fate struck him ten years ago. He is no longer the Michael I knew in Formula 1.”

Todt has a close relationship with the Schumacher family, revealing in 2022 that he saw the German three times a week on some occasions and adding that he was in “the best hands… surrounded by people who love him”.

Mick, meanwhile, drove for Haas F1 for two years before stepping down at the end of the 2022 season after a difficult campaign and several expensive crashes.

Schumacher said The Independent in June that he is “very hungry” to carve a route back into F1 as first choice over other motorsport competitions.

However, any way back into the sport next year seems to have evaporated now that Sauber they signed The leader of the F2 championship, Gabriel Bortoleto.

“There’s a lot that hasn’t been seen yet, especially from a driving standpoint,” Schumacher said.

“It’s never been a secret, my goal is to get back on the grid. I have shown in many ways that I am capable of winning championships. Is it just a matter of fitting into someone’s schedule, does it fit into their plan?

“I understand how I could have improved (at Haas) and there is still a lot to show from me. It’s all about, what do you want in your team now? Want someone you can build a team around? Good for marketing? Do you just shut up and drive? There are so many different types of drivers.

“As for me, I am very hungry. I just have to keep performing in the WEC (World Endurance Championship), showing everyone what I can do. Then people will know what they’re getting if they hire me and hopefully I can prove to everyone that they made the wrong decision not to keep me.”

Schumacher will compete alongside Sebastian Vettel at the 2025 Race of Champions in Sydney in March.
