New video shows an officer rescuing the driver who crashed into the Phoenix pool

PHOENIX (AZ Family) — The Phoenix Police Department is hailing one of its officers as a hero after saving a man who crashed his car into an apartment complex pool early Halloween morning.

On Tuesday, the department posted on social media an edited body camera video of the rescue that took place on 35th Avenue, just north of Indian School.

Police said the unidentified driver crashed through the fence and into the water.

An officer arrived and rushed to the pool.

“The car is still in the pool. I’m trying to see if there’s anyone in there now,” the officer radioed.

He removed some of his equipment and entered the pool.

Dashcam video from another officer shows the first officer on top of the car and hitting the sunroof with a metal object.

The man comes off the roof.

“Phoenix police, come here,” the officer said.

The driver is pulled from the car, and then another cop pulls the officer out of the pool.

He was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

Police said the driver accidentally stepped on the gas too hard and went into the pool.

“Thanks to the officer’s quick and courageous response, the man’s life was saved,” the department said on social media.
