Queens shooting prompts calls for safety crackdown on Roosevelt Ave

After gunfire erupted outside a Corona barbershop, community leaders and Queens residents are pushing for increased safety measures and urging city officials to continue cleanup efforts along Roosevelt Avenue.

Surveillance video of the Friday night shooting shows three suspects entering the store, with one of them later firing a gun at an unidentified individual off camera.

The owner of the barber shop, who tried to intervene, said he was concerned about the increase in violence in the area and the lack of an effective police presence at the time.

The incident follows an NYPD crackdown on prostitution in the area, as well as a year marked by tensions over the growing number of migrant street vendors in Corona Plaza.

While advocates of migrant vendors argue that the workers are simply trying to support their families, some local residents, many of whom are Latino, believe the rise of unregulated vendors has led to an increase in crime.

At a press conference Monday, community members said they want New York City to keep its commitment to cleaning up Roosevelt Avenue and improving safety. Community members say they hope a stronger law enforcement presence will make their neighborhood a safer place.

Authorities have not yet announced any arrests in connection with Friday’s shooting.
