British Independent Film Awards 2024 nominations announced

Kneecap leads the pack at this year’s British Independent Film Awards with 14 nominations. Action for Rich Peppiatt’s exuberant comedy about the eponymous west Belfast hip-hop trio, which was supported by BFI The production fund with National Lottery money, includes awards for Best Director, Best British Independent Film and Best Joint Lead Performance for Kneecap trio Liam Óg Ó Hannaidh, Naoise Ó Cairelláin and JJ Ó Dochartaigh.

Love Lies Bleeding, Rose Glass’ bodybuilding noir, is in second place with 12 nominations, including best director, best British independent film and best joint lead performance for stars Katy O’Brian and Kristen Stewart.

The Outrun, Nora Fingsheidt’s adaptation of Amy Liptrot’s novel, follows with 9 nominations, while Andrea Arnold’s Bird, Rungano Nyoni’s On Becoming a Guinea Fowl and Sally El Hosaini and James Krishna Floyd’s Unicorns each have seven.

Bird is also supported by BFI Film background, with others BFI financed films that received nominations, including Hoard (6 nominations), Santosh (4 nominations), Sister Midnight (4 nominations) and Sebastian (1 nomination). Grand Theft Hamlet, which was funded through BFI Doc Society Fund, also received 4 nominations, while Bring Them Down, funded through United Kingdom Global Screen Fund, received two.

In the international independent film category, Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine as Light, which will be released in theaters by BFI The December spread takes on Anora, The Chimera, No Other Land and The Sacred Fig Seed.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony on December 8.
