HAWTHORNE, Fla. (WCJB) – Hawthorne’s traffic mess got worse tonight before it got better.

Firefighters cleared a spill following an accident between two semi-trucks and a freight train.

Officials say the crash at the intersection of Southeast 71st Avenue and 221st Street injured one person who was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Maintenance work closed the CSX railroad crossing on US Highway 301, which had traffic, including heavy trucks, detoured onto local streets.

FDOT officials say the closure should continue through Thursday.

Residents are frustrated with the congestion, including former Mayor Matt Surrency, who posted on social media saying crews should have done the repairs in stages.
