2 charged for domestic assault in Keokuk Saturday

KEOKUK, Iowa (KWQC) – Two people have been charged in a domestic assault case in Keokuk, according to the Keokuk Police Department.

According to a news release, Keokuk police received a report of a possible stabbing around 7:20 a.m. Saturday.

Police say 30-year-old Shayla Johnson initially told officers she received a call from her boyfriend, 30-year-old Zachary Vizcaya, asking to be picked up.

Johnson told officers that when she arrived, she found Vizcaya bleeding from his midsection and took him to a medical facility without contacting medical services.

Police said officers were told the incident occurred on S 7th Street and the Vizcaya was picked up by Johnson near Bank Street and Kilbourne Park. Officers searched both areas for evidence to support this claim, but found none.

Officers went to the area of ​​Vizcaya and Johnson’s shared residence, where they found evidence of blood on the sidewalk. The scene was secured by the Keokuk Police Department.

Officers said they discovered an altercation had occurred at Johnson and Vizcaya’s home.

Police said that during the altercation, Vizcaya allegedly attacked Johnson, cutting off her air flow. Johnson later armed himself with a knife and allegedly stabbed Vizcaya in the midsection.

Police said there was evidence to suggest the stabbing was revenge.

A search warrant was served at a residence in the 100 block of Timea Street in Keokuk. A thorough search of the residence was completed and items supporting the charges were discovered and seized by the Keokuk Police Department.

Zachary Vizcaya, 30, of Keokuk, was arrested Sunday. He is charged with felony aggravated domestic assault obstructing airflow. He was taken to jail to await an initial appearance.

Shayla Johnson, 30, of Keokuk, was also arrested Sunday. She is charged with malicious wounding, a Class D felony. She was taken to jail to await an initial appearance.
