Driver charged after two-car crash in Canandaigua leaves one injured, 5&20 temporarily closed

Ontario County authorities reported a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of State Route 5&20 and Hickox Road in Canandaigua early Monday afternoon that left one driver with internal injuries and led to multiple charges.

According to the Ontario Sheriff’s Office, Jay A. Vandyke, 62, of Bloomfield, was traveling east on State Route 5 and 20 around 1 p.m. when he collided with another vehicle. The other driver, Mark F. Powless, 74, of Niagara Falls, was slowing for a red light when Vandyke rear-ended his vehicle. Vandyke suffered internal injuries and was taken to the hospital in stable condition. Powless was uninjured in the incident.

Authorities determined that Vandyke was operating his vehicle with a suspended driver’s license. He was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation in the second degree, as well as citations for unreasonable speed and caution and following too closely. Vandyke is scheduled to appear in Canandaigua Court to answer to the charges.

As a result of the collision, State Route 5&20 was closed between Hopkins Road and Hickox Road for about an hour and traffic was rerouted until the scene was cleared.

The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office, Cheshire Fire Department and Canandaigua Emergency Response Team responded to the scene.
