“Why do people do this?”

Seeing wildlife in their natural habitat can be an exciting thing. From traveling across open plains to herding herds, the opportunity to see nature in person can be an impactful experience. However, caution should be taken when viewing wildlife, as safety is a primary concern for both visitors and animals.

As posted on Instagraman onlooker filmed footage of a “death wish” tourist testing his luck with wild bison while getting up close and personal to take photos.

Originally captured by an outdoor photographer Alyssa Gresham (@alyssamgresham) and shared to the account Yellowstone Mountains (@touronsofyellowstone), the video clip shows a bison grazing on the side of the road, where the sudden camera pans to an intrepid tourist on the sidewalk who tries to take better pictures by coming into closer contact with the animal.

Bison do a lot more for our ecosystems than meets the eye. For example, the presence of bison was found to increase local plant diversity and drought resistance by twofold, on a study from Kansas State University.

That global temperatures continues to grow, the benefits of plant biodiversity and drought resistance are a real treat, especially in areas prone to long periods without rainlike the american Southwest.

The bison’s freedom to roam also benefits communities, especially those who wish to make a connection with cultural or geographical heritage.

Tourists sometimes throw caution to the wind to get a more careful viewing or interaction. They were numerous court where visitors have ignored warning signs, ventured into protected areas or come dangerously close to wildlife than is recommended.

Getting too close animals such as bison or bears can become stressful for them, which can lead to dangerous situations for both animals and tourists. If an animal feels threatened and attacked, it could be euthanized to prevent future incidents.

Becoming aware wildlife safety and how to navigate around them can lead to better experiences for tourists, animals and the planet itself.
