Dan Campbell provides an injury update on two key starters for the Lions attack

ALLEN PARK – Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell provided an injury update on two key offensive players during his media availability on Monday.

All-Pro tight end Sam LaPorta, who had a career-high 66 receiving yards and a touchdown in Sunday’s 26-23 comeback victory over the Houston Texans, suffered a sprained AC joint in his shoulder.

Left tackle Taylor Decker, also managing a shoulder injury, missed Sunday’s game, prompting Dan Skipper to fill in at left tackle while Penei Sewell remained at right tackle.

“It’s going to be day-to-day, but we don’t think it’s anything like, ‘Oh man, this is going to be a long, nagging injury,'” Campbell said of LaPorta. “I think we’ll get through this. I’m hopeful this week, but I can’t say it’s doubtful.”

Of Decker, Campbell added, “Decker is questionable, but he has the right streak.”

In the past, Campbell often moved Sewell to left tackle when Decker was out. However, this time he opted to keep Sewell on the right side and explained the rationale behind the decision.

“We felt like when the Decker injury happened and we felt like there was a chance he wouldn’t play, the hay was already in the barn,” Campbell said. “So let’s leave Sewell on the right (I like). That’s where he took his reps. I mean, the biggest part of it was we came in on Thursday and, man, we’re running, we’re in pads, live reps, we’re moving.”

Campbell continued, “And that’s where he got his reps, and then Skipper filled in at left tackle and got those reps there. So let’s not make this change where, “Okay, Skip, I know you’ve got those reps there, go right. Sewell, the opposite.”

“We felt it would be better to do this. And it worked – it just happened to work. There were a number of plays that went Sewell’s way, and the rest is up to him. I mean, he made some incredible blocks.”
