New misconduct hearing for former West Yorkshire Police detective

A former police officer who published intimate photos of a woman on social media without her permission will face a new misconduct hearing after new evidence came to light.

Simon Sewell was working as a constable in the Kirklees area at the time of the crime but has since resigned from West Yorkshire Police.

He said the woman could not be identified in the photographs, a claim he disputed at a misconduct hearing of Mr Sewell this week.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said a further hearing would take place “in due course”.

Mr Sewell, who did not attend the hearing, admitted 12 offenses of breaching the standard of police conduct between June 2020 and May 2023.

These include sharing photos of crime scenes, making disparaging comments about the account of a woman who claimed she was raped, and accessing police records without a legal purpose.

He told investigators he had acted under duress when the violations occurred.

West Yorkshire Police said Mr Sewell had not been charged with any offense in relation to the offences.

The new evidence in his case was produced while the panel was deliberating.

The spokesman said: “The court accepted this new evidence to be considered as part of the case.

“As a result, the panel has now recused itself from the case and a new hearing will be arranged to hear all the evidence in full in due course.”
