Dontoria Gilbert lost her teenage son Halloween gun violence.

Mom never thought she’d be standing in the middle of a room, surrounded by a circle of other boys, as they clung to her heartbroken words just a week later. These were the same boys who had come to know her son, grieving his loss while navigating circumstances sometimes beyond their control to prevent a similar fate.

“He picked the wrong audience,” Gilbert told them Wednesday night. “I just want all you young people to please be safe here. Because I lost my son and I never thought it would be me. So please choose your friends wisely.”

While most of the boys were listening intently, one kid had his head in his shirt.

Marcus Johnson, 10, listened to his mother’s cries for a while before wiping away his own tears and walking to the middle of the circle to hug her. As they tearfully clung to each other, others inside Francis Bellamy School 102 rose to surround the family in support and prayer.

new BOY (Breed of Youth), the youth mentoring service program, hosts its weekly Circle of leaders on Wednesdays. This week focused on healthy grieving, social emotional awareness, social media responsibility and decision making, all while remembering one of their own, Dashawn Anthony Gilbert, 17.

He was one Warren Central High School senior. According to his family, he kept busy with various jobs and was due to graduate in early December.

The teenager was shot and killed on Halloween night, a block up the street from where he lived. He had just left his family home before 7.30pm on October 31 before he was shot dead in the middle of the street on Brook Crossing Lane and Brook Crossing Court. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police have not named a suspect.

Now, people who knew him in recent years are trying to navigate the reality of youth gun violence that hits so close to home.

“We have some guys on juvenile probation,” said New BOY founder Kareem Hines. “We have some in DCS, the Indiana Department of Children Services, and we have some that will be leaving this circle tonight and going back to a detention center. Not everyone in New BOY is in the system, though. Some are just in situations where I can be easily influenced and I have mothers and grandmothers who ask for help.”

Hines said Gilbert was never in trouble when he was a member of New BOY

What he will miss the most is the opportunity to see Gilbert being a big brother to not only Marcus, but the other guys who were on the show.

“He was respectful and never gave me a pep talk,” Hines said. “I wish we could still have him here because now we have to take care of his baby brother. Now, we really need to check on his mom and make sure the pain doesn’t continue a cycle of pain and pain.”

Youth murders in Indianapolis

Gilbert’s death is the ninth youth homicide in the city this year, including the death of an unborn child, according to Indianapolis Metropolitan Police. Youth homicides are down for the first time in five years, and Hines credits adults investing in youth as a major reason.
