GWCL will take legal action against defaulting customers

By Emmanuel Gamson

Takoradi, November 5, GNA – Nana Yaw Barima Barnie, the acting Western Regional Manager of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), says the company is compiling the list of non-paying customers in the region for prosecution for arrears and non-payment of water bills.

He said that as of October this year, their records showed that customers in the Western Region owed GWCL about GHC 23 million and that the company was taking steps to take those who are paying us to court.

In an interview, he said: “We are making the list of all the customers who have been disconnected but failed to pay their bills and we are taking them to court because we need the money to run our operations.”

Nana Barnie encouraged defaulting customers to pay their arrears to avoid being dragged to court, saying: “We are very prepared to use all legal means to recover all the arrears that people owe us.”

He stated that GWCL was no longer a subsidized organization and they depended on invoices to carry out their daily activities, however non-payment was a challenge to their work.

“We request our customers to pay their water bills to help us run our day-to-day operations, otherwise there will come a time when GWCL will find it difficult to purchase chemicals for water treatment, fuel and other operational items in the cause of the lack. – paying the water bills”, he added.

Nana Barnie asked customers to take advantage of GWCL’s electronic payment platforms to pay their bills at their convenience.

“To make it easier for customers to pay their bills, we have introduced electronic mode of payment and they don’t have to go to any payment point, bank or GWCL offices.

He said customers could use the GWCL mobile app or other platforms and pay so they could help serve them better.
