I-96 is reopening in mid-Michigan after a fatal crash involving a semi truck Saturday night

The site of massive deadly wreck over the weekend in mid-Michigan that left four dead has reopened after more than a day of cleanup.

Access to the westbound I-96 overpass near Webberville in Ingham County was restored Monday morning, state police said on social media. It took more than 24 hours to reopen the freeway over the M-52 after a semi-truck crashed into stopped traffic late Saturday night.

Three of those who died were in a single vehicle, while the driver of a pickup truck also died after being ejected from the vehicle.

The driver of the semi was also injured after suffering severe burns, Michigan State Police told FOX 2 on Sunday.

“I just ended up plowing into a group of vehicles. That caused an explosion and the vehicles caught fire,” said Lt. Rene Gonzalez.

Video of the crash included security footage from a nearby gas station that showed a fireball erupting from the highway after the crash. Multiple videos from drivers showed the semi truck on fire as debris fell onto the freeway below.

A further 17 people were sent to hospital after the crash, which happened around 11.48pm on Saturday night.

Just before that, state troopers shut down I-96 to hang utility poles across the freeway for DTE. The roadworks required traffic to be closed while the roadworks took place.

According to Gonzalez, road work had been done and was in the process of allowing traffic to resume when the accident occurred.
