JOLIET, Ill. (WLS) — A large fire at a landfill in southwest suburban Joliet has closed nearby roads as crews work to put it out.

Emergency crews responded to the fire at the BL Duke scrap yard on Genstar Lane at around 3pm.

North Broadway Street is closed near Theodore Street as the Joliet Fire Department battles the blaze, Joliet police said. Drivers should seek alternate routes.

The debris fire is expected to burn through the night. At one point, the flames threatened nearby buildings.

The warehouse contained flammable liquids and there are reports that some employees were trapped when emergency crews arrived. All were safely evacuated and no injuries were reported.

Firefighters had to dig through the pile of burning wood, plastic and metal to get to the source of the fire, putting out the flames along the way.

Crews from multiple jurisdictions responded to the scene, including Joliet and Lockport. The fight is being overseen by the Lockport Township Fire Protection District.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
