1-on-1 with SC State Professor turned lead actress in Tyler Perry productions

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) – Ursula O. Robinson has an inspiring story.

From starting his acting career at age 6 in Greensboro, North Carolina, to not following his dreams of stardom due to insecurities, to landing the lead in two Tyler Perry productions in three months, Robinson has succeeded so much. much.

Robinson can be found on Netflix’s “Beauty in Black” and Amazon Prime’s “Divorce In The Black.”

“The Product of Preachers and Teachers”

Growing up in a close-knit family, Robinson became interested in acting while singing Christmas carols with her siblings and cousins. At the same time, however, she was often teased by her peers about her weight. Hoping to gain his trust and face her haters, she constantly prayed that God would make her famous.

“A 6-Year-Old’s Answered Prayers”

Robinson’s lifelong dream was to become a professional actress, something she thought she could not achieve at one point due to her size.

She recalls an agent telling her she needed to wait until her “face caught up with her body,” meaning she looked young, but her body type appeared to be older.

For more than two decades, she took a break from auditioning until one of her former students encouraged her to audition for a movie with Tyler Perry.

Robinson became emotional recounting her recent success as the lead actor in the two Netflix productions.

“You are enough, period. Now get out.”

For nearly three decades, Robinson taught theater at South Carolina State University and currently chairs the department.

While auditioning for major roles, she still writes and directs plays at South Carolina State University.

The next production, “Thirsty” will be November 14th through November 17th at 8:00 PM in the Henderson-Davis Theater campus.

Tickets can be purchased Here.

Robinson is also working on a book and says you can expect to see her in season two of Netflix’s “Beauty in Black.”
