Art Shanty Projects is back this winter – hopefully on ice – after 2 years of weather problems changed plans

Art Shanty Projects will be official it happens again in 2025the artistic director of the event, which runs Saturday and Sunday from January 18 to February 9, 2025, announced on Wednesday.

The hope is that the art installations will once again be on the frozen waters of Minneapolis’ Lake Harriet for the entire 3-week program.

Typical Art Shanty projects include installations that are both indoor art shacks and outdoor art projects. The annual event hasn’t had a season full of indoor and outdoor shanties on ice from 2020. As it usually spans from mid-January to early February, it has not been affected by the pandemic in 2020.

However, the event took a “pandemic hiatus” in 2021. In 2022, Art Shanty Projects they returned, but they were entirely outdoor facilities for pandemic safety.

In 2023the indoor lodges returned to the event, but had to use “Plan Beach” and hold the event on shore due to weather conditions.

The Art Shanty Projects of 2024 began on the ice, but was cut short due to rapidly warming winter weather, prompting Artistic Director Erin Lavelle to make the difficult decision to close Art Shanty Projects after just one weekend due to deteriorating ice conditions that creates safety issues.

For the 2025 schedule, Lavelle says some of the 2024 booths and shows will return because many people didn’t see them last year, and many new projects will also debut.

“Art Shanty Projects exists to connect with each other and our shared winter landscape, with friends and strangers alike. It’s an exciting place to work through what’s happening in life locally and globally,” says Levelle.

There is no specific theme to baracone, which explores a variety of subjects through art. Several fan favorites will return in 2025, including the dance party.

The Art Shanty Project will be open from 10am to 4pm on the three weekends it is open. It’s free to attend, but donations at the door are welcome and are part of how they raise their annual funds.
