Lions HC Dan Campbell shares support for WR Jameson Williams

Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell addressed the status of wide receiver Jameson Williams after reports surfaced of a potential police investigation.

Williams, who is already serving a suspension for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances, faces possible charges related to carrying a weapon without a concealed carry permit. The incident was investigated by the Detroit Police Department investigate why Williams was not arrested during the traffic stop.

Despite the off-court drama, Campbell said Wednesday he thinks it’s worth sticking with Williams.

“For me, I judge people by what’s in their heart and I know what this kid is made of and he deserves to stay,” Campbell said, via Jeremy Reisman of Pride of Detroit. “So he’s going to learn from it, he’s going to grow, he’s going to be better for it.”

Williams denied intentionally taking any performance-enhancing substances. He was also suspended for the first four games of the 2023 season for a violation of the league’s gambling policy.

Repeated off-field incidents are sure to frustrate the Lions, but they don’t appear to be done with the young wide receiver. Part of that is undoubtedly due to his talent level. The 23-year-old is a big-play threat and has 17 catches for 361 yards and three touchdowns so far in 2024.
