The Myrtle Beach hotel had no security during the fatal shootings, the lawsuit alleges

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – The estate of the woman killed in a 2022 shooting is suing a Myrtle Beach hotel over her death.

Rhonda Harris’ estate filed a lawsuit last week naming the Yachtsman Resort and Lashawn Jarrett, the man accused of killing Harris.

The yachtsman invited Harris, a 38-year-old Lancaster County woman, to the hotel on March 1, 2022, “for the purpose of conferring a benefit upon the defendant yachtsman,” the lawsuit states.

Harris’ estate claims the hotel was in a high-crime area and was negligent by not having adequate security. The property claims there were no security guards on site, although they “had actual or constructive knowledge of dangerous activity”.

While Harris was in a parking lot, Jarrett got into an altercation with “other patrons” and opened fire, killing Harris, who was an innocent bystander, according to the lawsuit.

However, the Myrtle Beach Police Department previously said Harris and Jarrett were in a car together and argued before the shooting.

Harris’ estate is asking a jury to determine actual, constructive and punitive damages.

A front desk manager for the Yachtsman Resort said the hotel had recently changed hands and no one would be able to comment on the process.

Jarrett’s felony charge in that case is still pending, public records show.
