NYC Traffic Deaths Hit New Record in 2024: Report

A new report by Transportation Alternatives and Families for Safe Streets reveals that New York City will see a record number of traffic deaths and serious injuries in 2024, prompting urgent calls for action from safety advocates.

Between January and September 2024, road accidents in the city killed 193 people and seriously injured another 2,338. According to the report, these figures represent more deaths this year than in eight of the last 10 years.

The report also found that every week in New York City, an average of 17 pedestrians lose limbs, organs or suffer life-altering injuries.

“From things like losing a limb to losing a fetus,” explained Alexa Sledge, Director of Communications for Transportation Alternatives. “Things that are very seriously life-changing for thousands of people who happen to them every day.”

In response to the report, the New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) said traffic fatalities are on the decline.

“NYC DOT is developing new strategies through engineering, education and law enforcement to address an alarming increase in deaths since the pandemic. Through measures such as expanded automated enforcement, new and improved street designs for pedestrians and cyclists, and new education campaigns around the rapid growth. of using electric mobility”, the statement states.
