Four Indian nationals were killed and one was injured when the car they were traveling in crashed and burst into flames in Canada’s Ontario province, authorities said.

The crash happened last week Thursday in the area of ​​Lake Shore Boulevard East and Cherry Street in the city of Toronto, police said in a news release.

The five people, aged between 25 and 32, were traveling in a Tesla when it “lost control and hit the guardrail and then a concrete pillar” before bursting into flames, the press release said .

“We have gathered some evidence so far to suggest that speed was a factor,” said Toronto Police Duty Inspector Phillip Sinclair, quoted by the Toronto Sun newspaper.

Four of the car’s occupants were pronounced dead at the scene by police officials who responded to the crash, the news release said. The fifth occupant, a 25-year-old woman, was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

She was rescued by a passing motorist who stopped to help, according to the report.

“Heartfelt condolences for the tragic loss of Indian nationals in a car accident that occurred yesterday in Toronto,” the official in charge of the Consulate of India in Toronto said in a post on X.

The post added that the consulate was in regular contact with local authorities and affected families in Canada and India. “All necessary assistance is being provided,” it said.

Police asked residents and drivers who may have dash cam footage or witnessed the event to contact investigators.
