The Minister for Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, Mr Nahid Islam, today (October 27) sought the cooperation of the European Commission (EU) to stop the spread of misinformation about the student riot and the full trial of the mass murderers.

“We want the EU’s cooperation to stop the spread of various disinformation about the mass uprising around the world and to complete the trial process of the mass killings properly,” he said when an EU delegation led by Ambassador Michael Miller called him at his office. .

He also called on the EU to extend support to provide treatment and rehabilitation to people who were injured during the uprising.

Michael Miller extended his support to the caretaker government, saying he came to talk about fundamental human rights, digitization, media reform and the electoral process.

“The interim government will complete all reform processes and complete the democratic electoral process,” Miller expressed hope.

The councilor said that they consider the issue of political reforms as a priority, as if the reforms will not be done correctly, the elections will not be fruitful.

“We want democratic transition as soon as possible,” he said, adding: “Before that, we want to bring about some basic reforms.”

He continued: “Our main challenge now is to bring economic stability and the public order situation under control.”

On development projects, Nahid Islam said that ongoing projects with development partners will continue, but some projects are being re-evaluated.

Noting that they are interested in working together with Bangladesh in the field of cyber security, e-governance, digital infrastructure, data protection, IT, the EU ambassador said they are ready to provide advice on any technical issue.

He also said that an agreement was signed with the ICT division for a project on effective e-Government involving 10 million euros.

The representative also expressed his interest in working to prevent the spread of disinformation on social media, as the adviser sought EU cooperation to stop online propaganda.

Nahid Islam said that the issue of improving the quality and professionalism of the media is under consideration.

“It is not possible to improve the quality and professionalism of media by government or law alone,” he said, noting that media professionalism requires training.

He said security and salary structures are being considered to attract young talent to work in the media.

The councilor said press freedom and reform are the main goals of the interim government. “Already, the Press Reform Commission has been formed to ensure freedom of the press…an outline of reforms will be drawn up based on consensus and suggestions from stakeholders,” he added.

Posts and Telecommunications Secretary Dr Md Mushfiqur Rahman, ICT Division Secretary Shish Haider Chowdhury, Embassy Program Manager Fani Farmaki and senior officials of the ministry were present.
