NEW YORK — One person is dead and another is seriously injured as the subway surfing trend continues in New York City.

Although the ages of the victims were not released, police said two women were surfing the subway when they fell between the tracks and were struck by a southbound 7 train just before 11 p.m. Sunday near the 111th Street station. from Corona, Queens.

One of the victims died and the other was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital in critical condition, police said.

Disturbing subway surfing trend

The Metropolitan Transport Authority has done a push to run public service announcements online and in stationsbut incidents continue to rise.

Sunday night’s death marks the sixth fatality this year.

Just last Wednesday, Adolfo Samabria, aged 13, died while riding the subway at Forest Avenue Station in Queens. Loved ones said he had celebrated his birthday just days before.

A friend called him “a ray of sunshine”, adding: “he had a long life to live.”

last month, Cayden Thompson, 11 years old died while riding the subway on the G train. His grieving uncle, a teenager himself, vowed never to try the trend again.

“I got into it. I saw videos online, I decided to do it,” said 15-year-old Christian Vega. “It’s very easy to get hooked on this stuff because once you do it, nothing will ever top it, like that adrenaline rush you get.”

“Other kids who are thinking about taking the subway and other kids who are still doing it, stop doing it. It’s not worth your life,” he added.

The city also asked social media companies to do more to remove dangerous videos.
