USC football is back in hot water entering its game week with Nebraska.

The Trojans’ football program was fined $50,000 and placed on one year of probation by the NCAA on Tuesday for a violation involving “on-field and off-field training activities.” The NCAA found that USC exceeded the number of coaches allowed in 2022 and 2023.

“Eight football program analysts have engaged in on-field and off-field coaching activities in the spring of 2022, fall of 2022 and spring of 2023, resulting in the football program exceeding the allowed number of six coaches for two years of study,” the NCAA said. in its release. “As a result of the violations, the parties also agreed that head football coach Lincoln Riley violated the rules of head coach accountability.”

The NCAA loosened the personnel limits after the 2023 season, but the violations occurred before the change. Riley will not be suspended because “he was not personally involved in the violations and demonstrated that he fostered an atmosphere of compliance and monitored his staff,” according to the NCAA statement.

The NCAA imposed additional sanctions other than a year of probation and a $50,000 fine. USC will be restricted from having the special teams analyst in practice and film review for six consecutive days for two weeks of the remainder of the season. The remaining analysts will be restricted from practice and film review for six consecutive days during four weeks of the 2024-25 season, and the school has imposed a self-imposed reduction in countable athletic activities for the football program by 24 hours during 2023-24. season.

Riley opened his Tuesday media availability with a few comments about the situation.

“I’ve had this behind me for several months now and I’ve moved past it,” he said. “I think you see with the level of penalties that have been handed out these days that the responsibility of the head coach really has … it’s a big issue and we understand. If it’s something really big, they’ We’re going to suspend the head coach, so I think that says what it’s about.

USC got off to a hot start early in the season, reaching No. 9 in the Associated Press poll. After falling at Michigan in September, the Trojans are 4-5 on the season and 2-5 in Big Ten Conference play.
