Stuck on I-480 during the Friday morning commute? Wet concrete is to blame.

CLEVELAND — Stuck in traffic on I-480 this morning? Maybe you were late for work or taking the kids to school and couldn’t figure out why. The Ohio Department of Transportation says wet concrete is to blame.

“I saw a joke on Twitter that it was held in Indiana,” said Brent Kovacs, ODOT District 12 public information officer.

Kovacs continued, “It was backed up to the Ridge, if not a little further. It was far.”

ODOT said this project has been running overnight all summer. Crews repaired the sidewalls and tread. But this morning, their concrete mix has not set.

“They usually set up in about three hours, but around 6 o’clock they reopened the road and realized the concrete hadn’t fully cured,” Kovacs said.

News 5 asked ODOT if it was too cold to cure the concrete. Kovacs said, “It’s hard to say. We don’t know if the concrete they used wasn’t the right concrete or if it was too cold or something, but we haven’t had a problem so far with the repairs, but whatever the reason , I did it last night.”

ODOT said the contractor for the project is Catts Construction. News 5 has reached out to the company for comment and has yet to hear back.

“Our contractor, we’re going to fine up to about $180,000 for this morning’s accident,” Kovacs said. “They can’t be on the road after 6am and they have to get off the road, get their work done. So if they need to schedule extra time for extra testing or extra healing, that’s up to them. We take the blocking of these lanes very seriously and will penalize our contractor for overstaying on the road.”
