Driver accused of hitting a pedestrian, turned around and did it again

DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) – A Davenport man accused of hitting a pedestrian twice in a parking lot has been charged with attempted murder.

In the early morning hours of Sept. 15, Deonte Amar Sims, 22, was driving a gray 2014 Chevy Impala when he saw a pedestrian walking into a parking lot in the 1300 block of West 4th Street, according to court documents.

Davenport police said surveillance video captured Sims turning into the parking lot and speeding toward the pedestrian.

The pedestrian ran toward a building before Sims hit him, knocking him to the ground, police said.

According to the arrest affidavit, Sims then turned around and the pedestrian ran away from the car again.

Sims struck the pedestrian with the front of the vehicle and also struck the concrete wall of the building, the arrest affidavit states.

Davenport officers arrived on scene and found Sims gone.

Officers say they found Sims and the vehicle in the 1400 block of West 3rd Street shortly after the incident. Several witnesses identified him as the driver of the car, and the keys to the Impala were in his pocket.

Police say Sims admitted to drinking alcohol throughout the night. He refused to perform a field sobriety test and failed to take a breath test. A blood test later confirmed that he had THC in his system. Officers also found marijuana in the Impala.

According to the affidavit, the pedestrian was taken to Genesis East and later transferred to Iowa City.

Sims faces charges of attempted murder, willful injury causing serious injury, assault while displaying a dangerous weapon, possession of marijuana, operating while under the influence and driving with an unauthorized license.
