A prison warden in Bungoma Town was on Sunday after a botched robbery with violence.

The director was said to be in the company of four other men when he tried to block a female driver along the KCC area, police said.

The carjacking suspects were on a motorcycle when they allegedly tried to block the driver around 6 p.m.

An alarm was raised alerting the locals who rushed to save the woman.

This led the four men to escape amid a chase from the crowd.

One of them was caught and taken in a frog to the Bungoma police station, where it was discovered that he was a guard at the local prison.

The motorcycle was also seized as an exhibit in the investigation.

The suspect told police he was not among the carjackers and was just a passenger.

Police said they would investigate to determine if he was involved in the incident.

Meanwhile, policemen in Endebess, Trans Nzoia County have recovered a G3 rifle loaded with 14 bullets following a shooting incident in the area on Sunday.

The weapon was recovered from a water channel Matisi-Endebess road following an intelligence-led operation.

The man who had the gun is missing and efforts to track him down are ongoing, police said.

He is believed to have been involved in an earlier violent robbery in the area on Sunday morning, during which he shot in the air as he made his escape.

A team has been dispatched to the area to track down the suspect, police said.

The gun was taken for ballistics tests to determine if it was used in other crimes, police said.

The area is experiencing an increase in crime amid police operations to deal with the situation.

Elsewhere in Makueni, officials from the Kenya Revenue Authority joined multi-agency teams to investigate the recovery of illegal ethanol that was intercepted in the area.

The dumped ethanol was on its way to Nairobi when it was intercepted by the police.

KRA officials installed seals on the cargo as part of the investigation into the seizure.

The chemical is used in the manufacture of alcoholic beverages.
