Teens receive training in traffic stops, conflict resolution at first VBPD expo

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — From conflict resolution education to rehearsing traffic stops with officers, teenagers and younger children in Virginia Beach had a new way to meet their local police Saturday.

The Virginia Beach Youth Services Unit held its first resource fair for parents and youth at the Law Enforcement Training Academy on Birdneck Road.

More than 125 signed up to come to educational classes, meet various vendors and approach several police units.

Organizers told News 3 the event is another way for the community and law enforcement officers tasked with protecting them to come together in a stress-free environment.

“(They were able to) experience what it’s like to be arrested in a secure environment, but they go through the steps of providing their registration, their license and answering questions and stuff and seeing what it’s like,” said Lt. Kevin Lokey with the Youth Services Unit “That way, they’re not really stressed the first time they’re stopped.”

The Virginia Beach Police Mounted Patrol Unit and SWAT Team also had stations set up outside the training facility for families to get close to the horses and equipment.

AAA Tidewater set up a station where visitors could use goggles to see how alcohol and even distracted driving can impair the operation of a vehicle.

Lt. Lokey says that following the event, his staff will look at how the day went to decide whether to hold another display in the future.
