A woman and a 2-month-old baby died in an accident; 3 other children sent to hospital

PHOENIX (KPHO/Gray News ) – A woman and a child were killed in a crash at a major intersection in Phoenix Friday afternoon.

On Saturday, authorities identified the woman as 25-year-old Kristina Lara and the 2-month-old as Josiah Lara.

Phoenix police said the collision happened shortly before 1:30 p.m. at 19th Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road.

Video from the scene showed heavy damage to a silver sedan and damage to a black pickup truck that appeared to have been rolled.

Investigators say the sedan was driven by a 23-year-old man heading south on 19th Avenue, who witnesses say was weaving in and out of traffic and speeding through a yellow light when he crashed into the truck.

The truck driver was heading north, attempted to make a left turn onto Lower Buckeye when the sedan collided with his vehicle.

The truck driver, identified only as a 75-year-old man, was not injured.

But police said Lara and Josiah, who were in the sedan, did not survive the crash. Three other children were also in the car and sent to the hospital as a precaution to check their injuries.

Police said impairment is not currently a factor in the crash, but detectives are still investigating what led to the collision.

None of the children in the sedan were wearing seat belts or in a car seat, according to police.

Authorities said they are still working to determine whether charges will be filed.
