Not The Prem Cup: Cambridge ‘architects of their own downfall’ against Chinnor

“We made some simple mistakes that really cost us. I think 90 percent of the points we gave away were a direct result of the mistakes we made,” said Cambridge head coach Richie Williams. for BBC Radio Cambridgeshire.

“I was pleased we were able to score a few tries from some of the work we anticipated during the week, but defensively we need to be better and the execution of the skill needs to be a lot more.

Neither side had played a competitive game since October 19 and there were signs of rust throughout as Chinnor scored five tries to Cambridge’s four.

“We were the architects of our downfall at times. A lot of that was because we didn’t play rugby for a few weeks,” Williams said.

“Both teams made a lot of mistakes when they were in possession. I thought there was the same level of intensity in defense but the difference between us and Chinnor was that they took their chances when they presented themselves and we were a bit scattered at times ,” Williams said.

“Regardless of the result, it was positive publicity for us and Chinnor. It was a good atmosphere and a decent crowd came to watch and we’ll be looking forward to hosting them on March 1.”

Two early touchdowns gave Chinnor the initial momentum before Seb Brownhill replied for the Blood and Sand.

And although Cambridge reduced the deficit to 26-24 after the break, a lineout error gave Pascoe the opportunity to seal victory for the home side.

“It was a decent performance, there were a lot of points scored and I was pleased with some individual performances,” added Williams.

“Seb Brownhill has really stood out, he’s been waiting for this opportunity for a long time, his market work has been really good, he’s worked hard and in the loose, so I’m encouraged by that.”
