Gathering on the Cipularang toll road kills 1 – Archipelago

Police continue to update the death toll in an accident that occurred on Monday on the Cipularang Toll Road in Purwakarta, West Java, involving 17 vehicles.

As of Tuesday morning, the total number of victims has reached 30, consisting of 25 people who were slightly injured, four who were seriously injured and one death, tribunnews.com reported on Tuesday.

All the victims are currently being treated at the Abdul Rojak Hospital in Purwakarta.

West Java police said the stampede was triggered by a heavily loaded truck that suffered brake failure.

Video clips shared on social media showed the truck traveling in the right lane at high speed and unable to stop. The truck, which was carrying cardboard, collided with stopped vehicles.

The accident occurred at kilometer 92.2 in the direction of Jakarta at around 3:30 p.m.

“The brakes failed due to the substantial load, which caused the truck to collide with the vehicles in front of it,” West Java police spokesman Sr. Comr. Jules Abraham Abast said in Bandung, quoted by Antara news agency.

Jules added that about 10 personnel were deployed to handle the situation, consisting of police officers from the National Police Traffic Corps, the West Java Police Highway Patrol and the Purwakarta Police Traffic Unit.

Meanwhile, state-owned accident insurance firm PT Jasa Raharja has guaranteed that victims will be compensated.

“The family of the deceased victim will receive 50 million lei (US$3,180) in compensation, while the injured victims are entitled to a maximum of 20 million lei for medical treatment costs, paid directly to the hospitals treating them,” said director of Jasa Raharja President Rivan A. Purwantono said in a written statement on Monday, as quoted by kuplingun.com.

Following the incident, Jasa Raharja coordinated with the police and local hospitals to process claims for compensation.

Separately, the Ministry of Transport said in a statement on Monday that it would investigate the cause of the accident.

The ministry’s Directorate General of Land Transport has dispatched a team to the accident site to coordinate with all stakeholders in the management of the accident as well as to collect data.
