Awami League leader files complaint against Muhammad Yunus and 61 others at International Criminal Court: report

A complaint has been filed against Bangladesh Interim Government Chief Counsel Muhammad Yunus and 61 others under Article 15 of the Rome Statute at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in the Netherlands.

Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury, an Awami League leader and former Sylhet mayor, filed the complaint, according to a report in ANI.

“On August 5-8, on behalf of the student movement in Bangladesh, all the leaders and workers of the Bangladesh Awami League and its various affiliates, Hindus, Christians, Buddhists living in Bangladesh and the Bangladeshi police force were victims of brutal genocide. and crimes against humanity,” Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury said in a video message posted on the verified Facebook page of the Awami League.

“In this regard, we have submitted all the facts and evidence to the ICC,” he added.

Apart from Yunus, these 62 defendants include all members of Yunus’ cabinet and student leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Alliance. About 800 pages of documents were attached to the original complaint, according to the video message, the report said.

Ample preparations are underway to file 15,000 more such complaints at the ICC very soon. The affected people will file complaints one by one, he added.

Notably, in the Bangladeshi port city of Chittagong, a clash between the Hindu community and law enforcement took place during a tense situation over a Facebook post criticizing ISKCON. Because of this, joint police and army forces conducted an operation there on the night of November 5.

India has condemned the recent attacks on the Hindu community in Chittagong, Bangladesh and said such actions will only create more tension in the community.

On August 5, a student-led movement ousted Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after weeks of protests and clashes that killed more than 600 people. Hasina (76) fled to India and an interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus was formed.
