The national power grid suffered another collapse on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, dropping Nigeria in total disruption.

According to data from the Nigerian System Operator’s Portal (niggrid.org), power generation dropped to an unprecedented zero megawatts as of 2:00 p.m., affecting all 22 Generation Operating Companies (GenCos) nationwide .

Grid Collapse Timeline 2024

  • The first major outage occurred on February 4, 2024, when grid capacity dropped sharply from 2,407 megawatts to just 31 MW by midday, eventually reaching zero shortly after.

Since then, the grid has kept failing, with subsequent breakdowns:

  • August 5
  • Three times in October
  • In particular, the October 14 crash it was followed by a partial failure the next day.
  • Another disturbance on October 19 that narrowly avoided a complete collapse.

In a post shared on X, Ikeja Electric apologized to its customers for the outage and confirmed the collapse of the national grid.

The statement reads:

Public Notice Dear Customer, Please be informed that we have had a system outage today, November 5, 2024 at 1:52 PM, which is affecting provisioning on our network.

“The restoration of supply is ongoing in collaboration with key stakeholders. Please take care of us.”

Similarly, Eko Distribution Company in Nigeria he also said:

“Dear customer, please be informed that a system crash occurred on November 5, 2024 at 1:52 PM, resulting in a loss of power to our network.

“We are currently working with our partners as we hope to quickly restore the network. We will update you as soon as power is restored.”

TCN talks about the latest collapse

Meanwhile, the Transport Company of Nigeria (TCN) has clarified that the collapse of the national network, which occurred on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, was a partial outage rather than a total outage.

In a statement on Tuesday, Ndidi Mbah, the general manager of public affairs at TCN, explained that the incident was caused by multiple line and generator displacements.
