West Row creates a cascade of poppies for Remembrance Day

A cascade of thousands of knitted and crocheted red poppies became a village centerpiece in time for Remembrance Day.

The eye-catching creation runs from the West Row sign, near Mildenhall, Suffolk, to the war memorial in the center of the village green.

Rosalind Hamill, deputy chairwoman of the parish council, said she was inundated with bids when she launched a plea for poppies on social media in January – one woman won more than 1,000.

“The community spirit here in West Row is amazing so I’m proud of what the volunteers have done together as a community,” she told BBC Suffolk.

More than 40 skilled collaborators from West Row and the surrounding villages heeded the call and knitted countless poppies.

“It just grew and grew,” Ms. Hamill said.

“A knitting group was created which met every Thursday, some wanted to do it in their own home in their own time and it became a great social event.

“I had so many that I created this river of tears, symbolizing those who gave their lives.”

Knitter Janice Killey said she was “so proud” to have made 1,072 poppies and made lots of new friends along the way.

Organizers used parish offices to assemble the ‘river’ with camouflage nets, inspired by the elements exhibition at the Tower of London 10 years ago.

Residents “absolutely love it”, with hundreds of positive comments on the community’s Facebook page, Ms Hamill added.
