Chargers’ Joey Bosa reveals his own status in Week 8

The 2024 campaign included another hurdle for Joey Bosa to clean up on the injury front. However, the longtime Chargers edge-rusher is set to return to action this week.

Bosa said Friday he will play in Week 8 against the Saints, via Daniel Popper of The Athletic. The four-time Pro Bowler sat out Week 3 while dealing with an injury affecting his sciatic nerve. As he prepares to return to action, Bosa added that he expects to be short during Sunday’s game. Still, having him available once again will be a welcome sight for the Chargers.

The 29-year-old has battled injuries over the past three years, making just 17 appearances since the start of the 2022 campaign. Bosa’s future was called into question last offseason based on the nature of his contract in addition to the time he missed. Just like fellow rookie Khalil Mackhowever, he agreed to the salary reduction and thus prepared for another round of adjustments next year.

Bosa is under contract through 2025, but none of his $13 million salary for the year is guaranteed and his projected cap hit is more than $36 million. An extension that lowers that number could come into play if new general manager Joe Hortiz renews his commitment to keep him through 2025. Given that Bosa already has another list of missed games on his resume this season, though , will probably need some productive and healthy activity. showing the rest of the way for that to be the case. The former Defensive Rookie of the Year is aware of the impact of his continued injuries, something he reflected on as well.

“The main thing is I feel like I let my team down by missing these games,” Bosa said, through Popper. “You’re letting everyone down. Disappoint the coaches. Disappointing the organization. Letting me down. It’s disgusting how these years have (passed) over the last few years.”

Bosa posted 10.5 sacks in his last full campaign, but was limited to nine between the 2022 and ’23 seasons. So far this year, he’s posted two sacks and four pressures, an indication that he can still make an impact when he’s on the field. The Bolts lead the league in scoring defense, but have managed just 12 sacks on the year; Bosa will look to assist in that department from Sunday.
