Helene death toll rises to 102 in North Carolina

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV/Gray News ) – The death toll from Hurricane Helene has risen after the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services confirmed another death.

The death toll in North Carolina now stands at 102 as of November 6.

Most of the deaths came from Buncombe County, where Asheville and Black Mountain are located.

The most common cause of death attributed to the storm was drowning.

Hurricane Helene brought catastrophic flooding to western North Carolina in September, devastating dozens of communities. About 1,400 landslides were reported in the area, according to the Associated Pressand at least 6,000 miles of road were damaged.

More than a million homes and businesses were without power and major roads were closed in the wake of the storm.

Residents continued to clean up after the flooding, and crews continue to work to reopen much of the region to families and tourists.
