Montana Power Quota Sees Higher Emergency Bill Assistance Numbers

HELENA — With temperatures dropping recently, a Montana non-profit is aiming to warm up neighbors in need.

Energy Share helps people with their energy bills and heating costs in the winter months.

In recent years, the organization has seen an increase in the number of elderly people in need. Last year, 31 percent of homes in need had at least one elderly person living there.

Energy Share was founded by a group of concerned individuals representing utility companies and nonprofit agencies.

The intention is to help people who don’t necessarily qualify for government programs but need support sometimes.

Rachel Haberman, executive director of Energy Share of Montana, says, “Energy Share helps an average of about 2,500 families a year, but last year we helped over 3,000. It was 3,128 statewide, so yes, that’s a jump huge for us, and the need is very strong there right now.”

Energy Share contracts with the ten Human Development Councils in the state to distribute funds.

If you have a neighbor who is experiencing loss of heat or light, you can help them by supporting them as they call for help, which can be intimidating. People can also donate to Energy Share by clicking the “Donate Now” button found on all pages of the Energy Share of Montana website.
